West Nile virus symptoms vary widely from no symptoms (asymptomatic)
at all to a rapidly fatal brain infection. When there is
an outbreak in an area the common symptoms are no symptoms
or a mild flu like illness, with only around one in every
200 people developing an illness after infection.
When West
Nile virus symptoms do cause illness the symptoms usually
appear within 2 to 15 days.
West Nile symptoms can include headache, tiredness and
body aches and swollen lymph glands.
The illness can last
between
a few days and as long as several weeks. In most cases
(80%) of people, infection causes no symptoms.
People of any age can be at risk of developing serious
health problems from the West Nile virus, the overall
risk increases
with age and for people with weaker immune systems.
The West Nile Virus can cause severe complication for
people of any age and health so it is vital to reduce
the risk
of infection.
You need to reduce the risk of getting
bitten by mosquitoes as much as possible. Anyone
who is exposed
to mosquitoes in an area where the West Nile Virus
as been detected is at risk.
